About

Kim is the author of Mommy Has a Boo Boo in her Boob, What We Believe, and the recently published Yes You Can! She is also a teacher, wife, and mom to three wonderful children (who are the stars in all of her books).

Determined to not have cancer be her only legacy, she set out to write a story for her children. And so Mommy Has a Boo Boo was born. Having set the precedent for writing from her own life experience, she followed up with two more books: What We Believe, loosely based on her own dual-denominational household, and Yes You Can!, a collection of wisdom nuggets that she acquired as a school teacher.

Her unique format combining narratives, footnotes, and comic book influences, makes her books appealing to an audience much wider than the usual young picture-book reader. Covering themes such as self-knowledge, love of learning, and taking risks, Kim hopes to inspire and empower her young readers on their own personal growth, and to hopefully someday find their own stories to tell.

Books

Based on the author’s personal journey through breast cancer, the book provides fun and practical guidance for children on how to cope when a parent is afflicted with the disease. It can be read very simply to young children or more in depth to older children. Follow the author’s journey as her children take on, with pride and enthusiasm, the roles of nurse, decorator, and personal shopper. Accepting her children’s need to be a part of her recovery, she soon discovers that they are integral to helping Mommy get better. And that sometimes family, humour, and staying positive are the best medicines of all!

Inspired by the author’s personal experience of growing up Catholic and marrying a Muslim man, What We Believe is a story about inclusiveness, harmony, and similarities. It recognizes that there are common beliefs in all religions, and that regardless of one’s religion it is all about being a good citizen of the world. The author shares her own dual-denominational family, and reveals that practising religious tolerance at home has made her own children more open-minded, accepting, curious, and tolerant of the diversity in the world around them.

Based on her many years working as an elementary school teacher, Haskan wrote Yes You Can! to help children realize that everyone learns differently. The book is meant to inspire children to positively enter challenges, persevere when things get tough, and develop into better and stronger people. Through literal and abstract imagery, it illustrates clearly that we need to look for opportunities, take risks, and climb mountains. Haskan is hoping that it will remind everyone that trying hard and doing your best is all You Can do!

Testimonials

From Happy Readers, big and small!

“I read What We Believe many times, and each time a different message stayed with me, spoke to me, challenged me, comforted me, or otherwise impacted me. Sometimes, I was inspired to reflect on my own beliefs. Other times a quote wove its way into my head and stayed for a day (or in the case of Nelson Mandela – a week!)”

-Francis, Resource Teacher Peel Board
